The Nanjing Gulou District Overseas Chinese Care Center, Home of Grace located at4 Huaqiao RoadDoucai Bridge, was established in June, 2011, and the location was provided free of charge by Huaqiao Neighbourhood and run by Nanjing Young Women’s Christian Association. The Center serves patients clients ages 16-60 who suffer from mental disabilities as well as light impairments, mainly providing rehabilitation and temporary accommodation. This service helps patients develop their potential in several different areas, including physical, mental and psychological, as well as in terms of social interaction, personal care, community care, family care, and leisure entertainment, with the ultimate goal of helping them lead an independent life to become a part of the community. The center provides temporary housing on weekends to give parents a chance to rest as well as organizing parental training. This training builds parents’ confidence in raising children and helps them understand their rights. The center also organizes fellowship activities for parents to strengthen each other, increasing their faith to overcome trials. The center’s practical policy is called the “Wonderful Life Program,” with the slogan “Wonderful Life of You, Me, and Him.” The center’s logo is comprised of many people holding hands to form the shape of a heart and reflects the scope of our center’s actions represented by the charity arch at the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum. Our center’s mission includes helping the needy inNanjing, especially those with mental disabilities and their families. The service slogan is working with one heart to show love, going forward hand-in-hand to create a new life together.

Since its founding, the center has expanded to accommodate 15 designated students. Every day, student’s schedules are posted for everyone to see. Each day from 8:45-9:05 AM students participate in brain exercises, and then meet together in the morning for group activities. Classes include art, general knowledge, music, math, home training, etiquette, English, sign language, writing, and recitation. In the afternoon, students are separated into groups based on their interests; activities include hand-bead crafts, weaving, paper-cutting, sketching, dancing, vocal music, calligraphy, and recitation. Every day between 3:30 and 4:30 PM students engage in physical activities and can choose from several different sports, including ping-pong, bowling, basketball, badminton, handball, magnetic darts, jump rope, sandbags, chess, and dancing. These activities are supervised by the teachers and staff.

The center employs two special education teachers and two professional volunteers fromHong Kong. The teachers participate in professional training and practice to constantly improve their communication skills with the students. After giving each student a personalized evaluation, teachers make training plans for each student based on their individual needs. We hope that everyone in the center can experience the goodness of life, a good environment, good people, and good training.
